I’m looking for a cheap ($950) wagon that will act as my road trip vehicle at the beginning of August. I need something fuel efficient, reliable, cool, and have a big enough boot to act as a bed. Please suggest a serious and silly car.

Minivan! Disregard fuel economy, acquire bed space.

So you should be comfortable enough to drive whatever suits your needs.

Buick Roadmaster. Not only is it bigger inside than a Chevrolet Blazer, it can tow! Plus, it’s a woodie!

Rambler seats were designed to turn into a bed. You don’t even need to buy the wagon variant, although if you did the bed would get much larger.

Just don’t. Not reliable. Not cool. Might fit the other two, but it’s not worth it. 2/10, would rather have an Aveo.

A Pontiac Vibe/Toyota Matrix? I use to own a Vibe, and I loved this feature. I could keep the drivers seat up, and have a small air mattress on the other side. It also great for hauling 8ft timbers. It is small on the outside, but big on the inside.
I could store my suit case behind the driver seat and still have space. I never felt like it was cramped once. Damn, I miss that POS.

Keep your eyes peeled for a last gen Country Squire. Even with the rear bench still in place the trunk is large enough for an adult to curl up in, and I can tell you first hand it’s going to be the most comfortable highway cruiser ever.
This image is cropping out almost half of the carpeted space. I got a very large bookshelf into one once.
If that’s too thirsty look for a Volvo wagon. I know the V70 had completely flat folding seats but I don’t know about any of the older (read: cheaper) models.

We rented one (2014 Sienna) for this trip I’m currently on. I approve of minivans. They’re so rare nowadays, anyways. All the soccer moms drive SUVs and CUVs now. Having captains chairs all around is great, and the seats all come out to give you a huge, flat floor.

For that little money, it seems like you will likely have a hard time finding anything. For example here in Houston a quick look at craigslist shows
one
wagon in that price range (a 2000 Taurus with body damage, ruined paint, a cracked windshield, and broken A/C). Probably you should look for a minivan, as those will be more numerous, and quite possibly cheaper (though you’ll have lower somewhat lower mileage). If you are foolishly worried about appearances, try to find a Previa, which are reliable, well-designed, and non-boring (just don’t look at the crash test results).

Escort wagon. Pretty easy to find in your budget (got mine for $850), super reliable if it’s got the 5-speed, and 30+mpg on the highway. I’ve slept in the back, and as long as it’s just one person, there’s plenty of room. Two people have to be comfortable spooning all night, but that can be a good thing with the right person. ;-)
Oh, and if you want more sleeping room, put a tent trailer behind it. I get 26mpg with my camper on the back. These cars tow quite nicely.

I would also say Roadmaster/Caprice wagon, but you $950 you probably won’t find one that isn’t a parts grade vehicle.
I’ve been eyeballing this Volvo 240 for $950 for about a week now.

I did a few 5000 mile road trips in my ‘05 Hyundai Tiburon which included sleeping in the back of it about half the time. I’m 5'10" and while it wasn’t exactly spacious, with the rear seat folded down I could sleep diagonally fairly comfortably. Granted, a wagon is way better (sleeping in the back of my Jeep Cherokee is fantastic with some 2" memory foam padding) but you can definitely make a hatchback work.
